Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

February 8, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm NST

**Presented by the Eastern Health Mental Health & Addictions Team**

This presentation is designed for front-line community workers and will introduce the concepts of Motivational Interviewing through a trauma informed lens (MI).

The session will explore MI as a conversational style of interviewing used in counseling that addresses the ambivalence that individuals experience when faced with the need to change.

MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communications which pays particular attention to the language of change, designed to strengthen personal motivation for a commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.” (Miller & Rollnick, 2013).

Learning objectives:

  • To provide a foundational knowledge of MI – it’s spirit, processes, and techniques.
  • To create an awareness of Motivational Interviewing as a counseling style and highlight its benefits in the change process while providing foundational knowledge of the application of MI.
  • To provide those with Motivational Interviewing with a perspective on how MI tools are relevant and useful for addressing substance use, other behavioral addictions and trauma.
  • Recognize how the “Spirit” of Motivational Interviewing promotes and supports a trauma informed system of care.
