NL Housing & Homelessness Network Response to Provincial Basic Income for Youth Announcement

St. John’s, NL, October 25, 2022 – NL Housing & Homelessness Network (NLHHN) pleased with Provincial Governments investment in Basic Income for youth in care.

We are optimistic by the announcement made by Minister Abbott yesterday that a new Basic Income Program will be implemented for youth receiving residential services through the Provinces voluntary Youth Services Program.

An additional financial support of $600 monthly plus enhancement of wrap around supports will surely result in improved quality of life for recipients.

This is the sort of investment and resources our youth need to ensure they are successful in finding secure housing, overcoming barriers to education, and ultimately transitioning into adulthood. We are hopeful that this is just the first step in our Province becoming a leader in combating poverty.” says Cyril Tobin, Executive Director of the NL Housing & Homelessness Network.
